Have you seen Rustin?
Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Brenda and I sat down with some homemade pizza to watch a movie.We chose “Rustin”.We had read about the film in an interview/conversation between George C. Wolfe, the film’s director, and Carr Center friend Carrie Mae Weems.When the film was over, I was overwhelmed in so many ways by what was accomplished by the events, activities and work cumulating in the March on Washington, its impact on America and the struggles that would lie ahead. And I was struck by the film itself. In so many ways, it reminded me of the events, activities and work of the Carr Center. As with the March on Washington, the Carr Center's progress, engagement and achievements have led to new challenges.
Today, the Carr Center has a unique role and responsibility to the arts, the artists and the community in Detroit and beyond. As the first Black arts organization to move into the city’s Cultural Center in more than 35 years, we have quickly become a core part of the fabric of the Cultural Center. Last year’s Jazz Crawl, the recent Educator’s Night and this week’s Noel Night events are but a small glimpse into the events, activities and work of the Carr Center in the historic Park Shelton. Over the past 32 years, world renown artists and the youngsters of the region have had the opportunity to present their work in person and digitally to thousands in Detroit and globally.The Carr Center has stayed focused on Black Artistic Excellence while inspiring, educating, challenging and entertaining our audiences.
With great opportunities, come great challenges. Today I come to you and ask for your support in helping us overcome the immediate hurdles and ensure that we stand on a solid rock for the future.Help us put a structure of giving in place that will ensure more progress, more engagement and more achievements.Today, would you make a commitment of $10 weekly to support the programs, event and activities of the Carr Center?
